The Young Turks have shared some more exclusive treats via their recent guest spots on FBi Radio including a Bullion intro, mix from El Guincho and an appearance from Willis Earl Beal. If you wonder what he sounds like over the phone, there’s an interview about half an hour in and ‘woah his voice’ (despite the line crackles) version of Evening’s Kiss. “I didn’t have any music training when I recorded the record we’re putting out now” says Willis “This record is a bit like walking on someone in the bathroom. It’s stream of consciousness insanity. It’s small songs for small ears. I hope people like it”. Sampha also popped by to share a new heartmelting new track ‘If Only A Friend Would Know’ around 45 minutes in.

Just before we released El Guincho’s ‘Piratas de Sudamérica’ in the Summer of 2010, he sent us this mix. It’s a musical love letter to all the things that inspired him to make the EP (YT044 - El Guincho - Piratas de Sudamerica by Young Turks/). Pablo’s passion for the selected music is painstakingly clear (his accompanying voice during the opening, being a personal highlight) and even with 100+ plays it still never fails to send shivers down my spine.
A wonderful moment in time and a perfect way to spend 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

EL GUINCHO - ShockHound Interview
Spanish artist El Guincho — aka Pablo Díaz-Reixa — expands on the inspiration behind his sample-heavy “space age exotica” sound

The Insider profiles emerging tastemakers in the fields of fashion, design, food, travel and the arts. Here the Spanish musician El Guincho (real name: Pablo Díaz-Reixa) shares his essentials. El Guincho is currently on tour in Europe promoting his latest album, “Pop Negro,” a chaotic mix of Afro beat, tropicalia and dub. El Guincho has lived a peripatetic life that accounts for the multicultural influences heard in his raucous music. Born in the Canary Islands off northwestern Africa, Díaz-Reixa has also lived in Paris (he cites ’90s French hip-hop as a key inspiration) and is now based in Barcelona, Spain. “Pop Negro” follows the success of his second album, “Alegranza!”(2008), and it’s another fiesta-friendly soundtrack with a similar Animal Collective-cum-Afrobeat sound. Name: Pablo Díaz-Reixa Age: 25 Occupation: Musician Heritage: I’m Spanish, but part of my family comes from Latin America. Birthplace: Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Current home: Barcelona, Spain. Languages: I speak Spanish, French, Catalan and a little bit of English.CULTURE, TRAVEL

What does “El Guincho” mean? I started using this name seven years ago, when I moved to Barcelona. It’s an endangered, big and beautiful (but scary) fishing bird from the Canary Islands. What were the inspirations behind “Pop Negro”? That feeling I had as a kid in a car with my parents driving to the beach and they played Pedro Navaja on the radio. This was when I didn’t even know what a record was. I wanted to write arrangements inspired on that incredible state of mind. “Pop” means octopus in Catalan. Daily uniform: Depends on my mood. Usually very boring polos and “gentleman” pants. White shirts somehow customized with a Coca-Cola stain after lunch. Current style obsessions: I love old Mistral equipment, shirts and beach towels. I wish they’d be easier to find. And I really love girls in their dresses in the summer in Gran Canaria. Stores: There are a couple of nice shops here in Gràcia, Barcelona, around Torrent de L’Olla street. For gifts, there is a really great store on Carrer Elisabets. It’s small but you can find a lot of out-of-print records, posters, low-budget Spanish movies from the ’70s and ’80s — good stuff. Hair upkeep: Have you seen my hair? Maybe the question should be more like, “Why aren’t you taking care of it?” Restaurants: Today, I ate with some friends at a Japanese restaurant called Kibuka, here in Gràcia. I love eating at Specchio Magico, Miriot, La Singular, El Refugio. Musical influences: My grandma. She’s a music teacher and used to be a singer, and also one of my best friends. She always gives me the best advice. The producer that I admire the most these days is Humberto Gatica. Digging his work with Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You.” French hip-hop album: “Prose Combat” by MC Solaar. Might not have my favorite songs on it, but it means a lot to me. I was obsessed with it as a kid. Venues: I used to love the so-called Bat Cueva in Barcelona, where my friend Miqui Otero used to organize a party called “Our Favourite Club.” Crazy shows in there. Also like Apolo here in BCN, Nasti in Madrid, LPR in New York and Plastic People in London. Record stores: Impacto and Edisons! Both in Barcelona. Musical equipment: Anything I can create a rhythm with. Days off: When I’m in BCN, I like walking around with my friends in Gràcia, go to a cocktail bar to have a Negroni with ‘em, play some fútbol, have a fideua on the beach at El Refugio and sleep a lot. If I’m on the Canary Islands, I like to go sailing, drive Zodiacs, spend time with my family in the south of the island, travel to other islands. Books: “Historias del Calcio” by Enric Gonzalez and Aristotle’s “Poetics,” which is really fun to read — I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it yet. Artists: Leonardo. And I really, really like both Manolo Millares and César Manrique. Movies: Probably anything by Roberto Rossellini. The fishing scene in “Stromboli” is one of my favorites. I like what Gato Barbieri said once: “It’s impossible to live without Rossellini.” I really like “Batman” as well. Dream collaboration: I’d love to work with Caetano Veloso.

El Guincho - Bombay

Bombay is from El Guincho’s album ‘Pop Negro’
Buy it from any good record store, or two of the best:

Directed by Nicolás Méndez.
Produced by CANADA (lawebdecanada.com)
Pop Negro’s production is based on hi-fi aesthetics from the golden-era of recordings. I did some research on radio hits/big selling singles in North and South America, England and Spain in the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. I found out that a massive percentage of these hits were engineered (sometimes also produced) by just around 40/ 50 different guys. The ones I’ve chosen here became a big influence on Pop Negro.
